This common interpersonal stressor occurs when a person says one thing, and their voice tone, face, and body "say" something different. The learned skill of awareness reveals when this happens, and what situa-tional and relationship impacts these two-level communications have (below). Usually, chronic double messages indicate the sender is un-aware of (a) being ruled by a false self, (b) sending opposing messages, (c) the impacts of these messages, and (d) how to reduce or stop them. If the receiver doesn't confront the sender on the two-level message, s/he is probably similarly wounded and unaware. Typical semi-conscious responses to incoming double messages are confusion, frustration ("What do you really mean?"), and distrust in the sender. If repeated over time, these can become expectations that add to other communication blocks and inhibit filling both person's needs. An effective way to reduce mixed messages and/or respond to them is to commit to Project 1 (harmonize your personality subselves) and Lesson 2 (grow seven communication skills). quiz / slides or text / other communication blocks / close |
